I see you've move the PSTN switch-off article to "copper network switch-off". It's not; all reliable sources are describing it as a total switch-off of the PSTN, which it is, in every meaningful sense. See [https://business.bt.com/why-choose-bt/insights/digital-transformation/uk-pstn-switch-off/], [https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2021/upgrading-landlines-to-digital-technology], [https://www.futureofvoice.co.uk/]. Good old-fashioned E.164 telephony will continue, but it won't be carried in the traditional way, either over the core network or last mile; everything will be IP. |
Note this goes way beyond just switching off analog voice; ISDN2 and B-ISDN are going, too. The key aspect here is that the PSTN is ''switched''; it consists of copper phone lines and TDM trunks (which include ISDN and B-ISDN, PDH, and SDH, and even in some sense ATM [ugh]), both of which support switched, dedicated, constant-bandwidth channels. Once TDM and copper baseband are all gone, there's nothing to switch, and hence no PSTN. Public telephony will continue as before in the form of E.164-addressed VoIP, but it won't be ''switched'' anymore. |
However, the copper access network is ''not'' going away just yet; substantial ADSL last mile connectivity will continue for a long time, until Openreach have replaced it all with first FTTx, and eventually FTTP. |
So it's the switched network service (PSTN) that's going, not the copper (just yet). |

Can you move the article back, please? [[Special:Contributions/2A00:23C8:72A8:E001:DF46:CAB9:102C:4B0|2A00:23C8:72A8:E001:DF46:CAB9:102C:4B0]] ([[User talk:2A00:23C8:72A8:E001:DF46:CAB9:102C:4B0|talk]]) 14:33, 14 October 2023 (UTC) |
