Many of you, I should expect have heard of the Oil company named E$$O (Or Exxon Mobil if you are in the USA). Statistics show that each person in the UK is situated within 2.5 miles from the nearest E$$O petrol station so this article wishes to discuss the contentious issue of E$$Os credibility, responsibility and truthfulness.

Firstly, I would like to discuss the views of Greenpeace (visit their E$$O pages Here: an organisation whose sole purpose is to help the environment. Greenpeace have been campaigning against E$$O for many years and their main reasons for doing so are as follows:
Their position on the issue of climate change
Funding the war in Iraq and Bush's campaign against the world.

E$$O flatly refuses to believe that the burning of fossil fuels has any negetive affect on the environment or climate change as a whole. The vast majority of respectable scientists believe this to be false and believe that the burning of fossil fuels (as well as aerosols and fridges) are the major contributor to climate change.

E$$O also have funded the Bush administation heavily and much more thasn any other oil company. No matter your opinion on the war (I was and always have been against it although this is by the by), you will agree that it is not an oil companies place to fund a war ove ra county with as vast oil reserves as Iraq.

Another thing about their funding of Bush is as soon as he got elected (by E$$Os money), he withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol - tthe international measure to cut down on global warming. The world's biggest polluter (per capita) of the planet is no longer a part of this Kyoto Protocol and it isn't nearly as effective without.

The final thing that I would like to discuss is their obsession with profits and money over the threat on the environment. Here is a quote from their own website, "Our investment criteria emphasize investment in areas where we have both relevant and leading-edge technology. Renewables, such as solar and wind power, do not meet either of these criteria."

Having said this, advantages of buying fuel from an E$$O pump are as far as I can gather:
1p/litre cheaper than many other leading brands of fuel
Free models of vintage cars

So, in conclusion, it's your choice. You can either have a model of a vintage car and 20p/month or a healthy planet in which to store your car and to spend your money.

Esso is an international trade name used by Exxon Mobil and its related companies.

In Canada, this brand is used on stations operated by Imperial Oil. It was kept when the Standard Oil company and its corporate descendants changed the brand name to Exxon in the United States and some other countries.

The name Esso is still used outside of the United States.

The name ESSO is the acronym for Eastern States Standard Oil.

The name ESSO is the phonetic spelling of the letters "S" and "O" which of course means Standard Oil. When Rockefeller's original Standard Oil Company was broken up, all of the off spring obtained rights to the trademarks in their respective territories. SO was one of these.

Standard Oil Co of New Jersey which had the ESSO brand originally had marketing agreements with its former siblings. Then, it tried to actually invade these territories. For example, in the early 1930's, 3 stations were opened in the midwest which was Standard Oil of Indiana Territory. To complicate issues, people were "fooled" with radio advertising since you cannot distinguish ESSO from SO. A lawsuit followed and Indiana won the case. Similar situations occurred over the years so EXXON was adapted since it can be a NATIONWIDE trademark in the US.

Today, Standard Oil Co of New Jersey is Exxon-Mobil while Standard Oil Co of Indiana is Amoco, now part of BP.
