-Thanks for your help. I'm still getting used to everything. I've tried to fix the audio files and make them a little louder. I think I might need to get a better microphone. Certainly not - looks like the page is due for an archiving! -SCEhardT 02:22, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your response here, but I sometimes (by necessity) work at a rather leisurely pace. :) Cheers! -- Macropode 05:20, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a higher-resolution version of Image:Gatech buzz.gif that we could use? Preferably something around 300px wide, or even better, in SVG format. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 07:21, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, I don't have anything like that myself. You might try asking Courtarro - I think he works for the Technique so he might have access to one. Don't forget though that we shouldn't have a logo resolution any higher than absolutely necessary (see {{fairusereduce}}, etc) -SCEhardT 14:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell me?

I feel that when I pick an article to record I should put on its talk page that it is in the process of editing or recording. I have seen the box that says that on some pages. How do I do this without messing up a page?

Thanks Ara Pelodi 23:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On the talk page, you can use {{User:Ckamaeleon/Spoken Wikipedia In Progress (no request)|Caninedoubletake|2006-12-09}} Where the two parameters are your username and the date you placed the notice. If you're making significant or frequent changes to the article as you edit record, you might want to also put {{inprogress}} at the top of the article page. Hope this helps! -SCEhardT 00:56, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Will you look at this Talk:Bookplate and tell me if I did it right or there is anything I need to adjust (like location I placed this or I needed to sign my four tildas under the box)? I would appreciate it. : ) Ara Pelodi 01:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering why you deleted the marina picture I put up. thanks and have a great day —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hughly741 (talkcontribs) 07:26, 9 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Unfortunately Wikipedia does not accept content licensed as "for use on Wikipedia only" since one of our goals is to have truly free content that can be used by anyone. Since your image was licensed in this manner, it was deleted. If you took the picture yourself, you are welcome to re-upload the image and license it as {{GFDL}}, {{cc-by}}, or {{PD}}. Thanks! -SCEhardT 13:37, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Hutcherson

Hello, why did you remove the picture of Josh Hutcherson, in the article, about him? Fighting for Justice 03:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image had an unknown copyright status for over 7 days and was thus met the criteria for speedy deletion. -SCEhardT 22:52, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion

Dear sir,

Like you, I'm a university student. You deleted my upload of a front page of a college newspaper that would have been useful to wikipedia browsers.

That was unfortunate. I can demonstrate beyond all doubt that I had authorization to upload that front page because I am an editor at that paper.

Beyond that, I believe front pages of newspapers belong on Wikipedia and should be considered fair use.

But I digress.

Please get in touch with me, as I have every authorization for publishing a 17,000 circulation daily newspaper front at the University of Maryland.

I would like to see this front page I uploaded reinstated.

Thank you.

--K-lit 09:25, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Call me anytime after 4pm, Sun-Thurs.

Kevin - The image was deleted because you uploaded it under a license that said it was only allowed to be used on Wikipedia. Unfortunately that does not fit with Wikipedia's goal of being a truly free encyclopedia where other people, companies, or organizations can freely use content from Wikipedia (with proper attribution). This leaves two options for your image:
If you truly have the right to release the copyright of the front page of your newspaper, you can upload it with a {{GFDL}} or a {{cc-by-sa}} license. However, I have serious doubts that as an editor you have the authorization to waive the school's copyrights on part of the newspaper.
The other option, which seems most reasonable to me, is to upload the file under a claim of fair use with the license {{newspapercover}}. You will also need to write a fair use rationale.
I hope this clarifies things; if you have any other questions please let me know! -SCEhardT 19:16, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it's clear that this account has been created purely for childish vandalism. I'd decided that the next block should be indefinite; I see that you've imposed a temporary block — would you object if I made it indefinite? --Mel Etitis (Talk) 22:17, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't have any problem with the general idea of banning this user, but the technical reason I choose a block rather than a ban is that IP edits and account creation are blocked now. I think that with an indefblock there is nothing done to the IP or maybe only for 24 hours? -SCEhardT 00:19, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose so; I didn't look to see how long you'd made the block, to be honest, which I should have done. Still, forty-eight hours isn't very long. I've no doubt that he'll start again when the block expires, though, and I think that then an indefinite block will be in order. If he opens another account, we can deal with that (he's not exactly a criminal genius...). --Mel Etitis (Talk) 09:26, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just read Wikipedia:Autoblock and I was somewhat mistaken in how it works. I have no problem with an indef block for this user now or upon further vandalism. -SCEhardT 03:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply; I'll keep an eye on him. Next vandalism... --Mel Etitis (Talk) 22:08, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't take long; as soon as his block had expired he was childishly vandalising. He's now blocked indefinitely. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 23:46, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DNA Spoken Article

Thank you for your comments on the spoken article I completed for DNA. I have now completed the audio information for the DNA.ogg file. I would appreciate it if you could take the time and listen to the spoken article and give me your comments, as it was quite a painstaking process to complete it and I would like it to be as accurate as possible. I recognise that recent changes to the article may mean I need to alter some parts of the spoken article. I think spoken articles are an important part of the future of Wikipedia and I hope to provide additional content for other long and technical articles that other people may find offputting for contributing narrations. Possibly unfree Image

Hi ! I am writing about the five following pictures which pose some copyright status troubles :

Plaza de Armas de Cuzco (pixinn.net).jpg
Sacsayhuaman (pixinn.net).jpg
Iles Flottantes Titicaca (pixinn.net).jpg
San Francisco de Lima (pixinn.net).jpg
Alpacas Sillustani (pixinn.net).jpg

I am the author of all these photos. If you go to my webpage at "http://voyages.pixinn.net/perou" you can read that all my pictures from South America are released under a Creative Commons CC-BY-ND 2.0 (see : "http://voyages.pixinn.net/perou/licence.htm"). As I know that this particular CC license is not compatible with Wikipedia, I reposted of these photos on Wikipedia using a CC-BY-SA 2.5 license. In order to verify my identity and that I am the author of these pictures, you can see that the pictures on Wikipedia are of higher resolution. So they were not copied from the website. Therefore I think the five pictures don't pose any problem regarding their copyright status. If I am wrong, please let me know : I wouldn't like to see them deleted. Best, -XtoFT - "Christophe Meneboeuf"

Thanks for getting back to me about this! I've removed the PUI listings. To prevent future confusion, please add the following (or something similar) to each image:
This image was uploaded by its creator, Christophe Meneboeuf. ~~~~
Also, your website name will need to be removed from the images (see {{watermark}}). To replace an image, just upload the new image with the old filename and it will overwrite the old one. One final note - since usernames are case sensitive, there is a slight mistake in your signature since it points to User:xtof rather than User:XtoF. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! -SCEhardT 00:30, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spoken article review

I feel I'm being a little remiss in leaving you to do the hard work in getting this set up properly, however your MediaWiki technical expertise clearly outstrips mine by a large margin. Rest assured that I'll continue to devote as much effort as I'm able to to reviewing spoken articles, although I probably should work on being a little less terse in writing reviews, lest I put people off. :) -- Macropode 02:14, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Audio problem

I've recorded two audio pronunciations. One I did in the standard Windows sound recorder before converting it to .ogg with an online utility. The other was recorded and exported from Audacity. Do you have any idea why my VLC Media Player refuses to play the Audacity-created file? Did I do something wrong when I exported it? - Mgm|(talk) 09:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure - I'd never used VLC to play ogg files but I just checked and mine does work. Are you able to play the troublesome file on other media players (Windows Media Player, for example)? -SCEhardT 14:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've installed VLC because Windows Media Player didn't play any .ogg files. When you say "I just checked and mine does work" do you mean that your media player plays my pronunciation files? Or that your VLC copy plays oggs? I've had some people record articles and those play fine. It almost seems a size-related problem. How do you set up your program to record files? Do you use Audacity yourself? - Mgm|(talk) 17:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, no I didn't check any of your files because for the past 36 hours or so I haven't been able to see any images (or other uploaded files) from the Wikimedia projects. My VLC copy does play oggs, as well as my copy of Windows Media player since I downloaded the codec. I've only made one recording for Wikipedia, and I did use audacity for that. You might want to try asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia - I'm not sure I can be of much help :-) -SCEhardT 20:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, what's up with the images today? —Disavian (talk/contribs) 20:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No clue - was just thinking of asking you about that. I logged in remotely to a coc machine and it couldn't load images either. Probably unrelated but I can't load weather.com either. -SCEhardT 21:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a Wikimedia problem, because I'm on campus now and they won't load, and they didn't load this morning when I was at home (using Comcast). —Disavian (talk/contribs) 21:11, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Still no images :-/ I'm going out of town - maybe images will be back when I get back in a couple days. -SCEhardT 02:57, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where did you download that codec? Whenever I try to play a file that isn't already working in Windows Media Player I usually get a failed to get codec erorr with no information where to find it. - Mgm|(talk) 21:02, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm I'm not sure - been over a year. I'll see if I can figure out what I'm using and get back to you. -SCEhardT 21:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I ran into the codec by chance. Odd that Wikipedia can help when WMP fails to do what is should be doing - downloading it automatically. - Mgm|(talk) 13:15, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool - Glad you found it. -SCEhardT 02:57, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question completely unrelated to Critical Mass

What does the "no original research" policy mean, exactly? I am a published author on certain subjects. Is it fair game to cite my own published works on, say, Tibet? Should I cite directly the works that I have cited in my publications? (They are many: One of my published works has 532 footnotes, many with multiple citations, in 148 pages.)

And what about, say, constitutional law? Am I free to quote Supreme Court cases directly? Or do I have to find some secondary source that makes the same point that I wish to make?

Andrew Dulaney 01:02, 6 April 2007 (UTC) Andrew Dulaney (whew! I remembered this time).[reply]

I don't know all the policy in this area. Rather than speculating, I will direct you to Wikipedia:No original research, which has a section specifically about citing yourself. If reading that page still leaves you with questions, try asking at Wikipedia talk:No original research or Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). -SCEhardT 05:01, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Critical Mass

Well, the central point of my comments about Wikipedia’s article on Critical Mass is the non-neutrality of its description of Critical Mass’s disruption of PEDESTRIAN traffic. I thought that I had made that entirely pellucid, but evidently not.

Any point you were trying to make was overshadowed by your attacks on Critical Mass in general and the other editors of the article. Your point will be more effectively made if you can remain objective.

The article says that “Critical Mass … is largely understood to be an effort to promote alternative (non-motorized) modes of transportation and to raise awareness about the safety issues that face commuters using non-motorized forms of transportation when sharing the streets with motor vehicles.” If “non-motorized forms of transportation” is intended to include walking, that is far from clear.

This is the type of stuff that needs to be removed from the article. "Largely understood," without a citation, is meaningless.

The article says that “[g]enerally, the purposes of the event as indicated by the actions of the riders are meant to oppose the domination of the automobile over our urban culture, or to create something different.” Shouldn’t at least some mention of impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic be made as a way of making that statement more neutral? After all, how does impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic in any meaningful way “oppose the domination of the automobile”?

The article says that “Critical Mass rides typically accommodate and yield to emergency vehicles and often even pedestrian cross traffic ….” That statement is accompanied by no citation to anything. It appears to be based on the author’s (your?) personal observations. So how are my personal observations to the contrary -- based on how Critical Mass has behaved over the years in San Francisco, which is, after all, where the whole thing got started -- any less legitimate?

The article says that “[ I]t has been pointed out that the current prevalent traffic signals have been designed to facilitate groups of motorized vehicular traffic ….” Last time I checked, traffic signals were also designed to facilitate groups of PEDESTRIANS trying to get where they are going.

But in that context, the article says only that “the act of corking also gives the Critical Mass participants an opportunity to talk to … onlookers about what is going on, or why they are being made to wait.” Well, why? What does Critical Mass have to say about impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic other than “too bad for you”?

There are many parts of the article that need to be cleaned, sourced, or removed. Adding additional poor material is not an acceptable solution.

Finally, how is "sycophantic paean" any more objectionable than "propaganda piece," which has been allowed to remain unmolested?

Again, WP:NPA "in a nutshell: Comment on content, not on the contributor."

Andrew Dulaney 01:23, 6 April 2007 (UTC) Andrew Dulaney (twice in a row! I’m on a roll now!)[reply]

Hopefully this answers your questions... -SCEhardT 05:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"There are many parts of the article that need to be cleaned, sourced, or removed. Adding additional poor material is not an acceptable solution."

OK, but neither should be leaving in place -- apparently indefinitely -- an article that reads, as another commenter put it before I ever even showed up, "like a propaganda piece". The credibility of Wikipedia's neutrality policy would be enhanced if this article were simply removed (or replaced by a bare-bones version) until it can be brought up to Wikipedia's stated standards.
