Anafi is a Greek island in the Cyclades. In 2001, it had a population of 273. It is south of the island Anydros.

This island has not been known to many holiday makers for a very long time, but has become quite popular the last few years. It is very small island with steep cliffs providing spectacular views of the sea and unforgettable sunsets. Anafi is a great place for recreation and relaxation. Here, time stands still, and you can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and little taverns without the pressure of doing and seeing lots of things.

According to mythology, the island was given the name Anafi because it emerged from the depths of the sea to give refuge to the Argonauts from a bad storm. Others say that the names is due to the non-existence of snakes on the island " An Ofis " (without snakes). In spite of its small geographical size, Anafi offers mythological as well as archaeological interest. At the monastery of Panagia Kalamiotisa, there is ruins of a temple built as an offering to the God Apolona. Ruins can also be found at Kasteli, and most of the findings such as the statues are now located at the "Archaeological Museum" at the Chora, in an extremely small room housing these ancient findings.

Attractions

Anafi is very much an island for walking. Through the old paths and around the steep hills, you could walk to the other side of the island (which would probably take a long time!!) or you can beach hop, walk from beach to beach. Even though some are very close to the others, each beach has its very own characteristics! The most popular beaches would be Klisidi and Roukounas.

Apart from sightseeing, there are other options, as well as little bars and cafes. Greek islands always have some kind of nightlife, and this is no exception. There are 3 bars if you were looking for somewhat of a clubbing experience, 2 of which are located in the Chora (the village). Milos bar which is located just to the right as you enter the Chora, built around an old wind mill and offers a nice view of the village. And then there is Argo, a substantially small room which surprisingly fits a large number of people and would be considered as the night spot for most youths on the island. Half way between the village ( Chora ) and the port ( the Gialo ), you will find a very remote club/bar called 'Mandres'. With a great view of the sea and also the neighboring island Santorini, this is usually the spot where holiday makers go the night before departing the island as its location provides a good look out point for the approaching ferry.

The journey to and from Anafi can only be done by boat, and since they have added more destinations on the way, it takes almost 19 hours.
