History

MOUNT SCOPUS (or MSMC) was opened on St Kilda Road in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia for its first school year in 1949, taking its name from Mount Scopus in Jerusalem, which remained in Israeli control during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a war memorial school dedicated to the memories of soldiers who have fought for the Nation of Israel. The first Jewish day school in Melbourne, it initially catered to 143 students, and was built to cope with the influx of Holocaust survivors to the Melbourne community. The college moved to a larger campus in Burwood on Burwood Highway in 1953. There are also campuses in East St Kilda and South Caulfield.

Scopus, as it is commonly known is famous for outstanding VCE (matriculation) results, not just compared with other Jewish schools, but throughout Victoria. It is routinely listed as one the top schools in the state.

Principals

The Current Principal of Mount Scopus Memorial College, is Rabbi James Kennard who began his role as Principal in 2007. He replaced Hilton Rubin (BA; M.Ed (ADMIN); HED).

He has already "turned the school around" by going back on former MSMC President, Ann Wolner's proposal to build a new school in Caulfield by putting the property MSMC purchased, Tudor Court, back on the market. Then, he announced that he would completely rebuild and refurbish the more than 50-year old Burwood campus by 2012. A podcast of his plans can be heard here: http://web.mac.com/jewishnews/iWeb/podcasts/ajn.com.au%20podcast.html

Tuition

Mount Scopus College is famous for allowing all Jewish students to receive a Jewish education no matter their financial situation. All applications for assistance with the cost of tuition are assessed on an individual and completely confidential basis. The school allocates a significant portion of its budget to fee assistance. Mount Scopus is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Organization's Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme.

Notable Graduates

Some notable graduates of the college include Israeli Government spokesmen Mark Regev, former Neighbours actress Lara Sacher, business mogul Solomon Lew, and Victorian Cricketer, former Australian Under 19's captain Michael Klinger and Australian Table Tennis Player David Zalcberg. Also, Peter Alexander, of Peter Alexander clothing brand, also graduated from Mount SCopus College.

Sherut Girls

The College is also known for it's "Sherut Programme". Every year, four Israeli girls are brought out from Israel on an educational programme. They come to add fun, spirit and an Israeli touch to the school.
