Maria Simon as Sonja in the movie Distant Lights for which she received a nomination as best supporting actress at the German Film Awards (as she did for her role in Good Bye Lenin! 2003).

Maria Simon (born 1976 in Leipzig) is a German actress. She is the sister of the actress Susanna Simon and grew up in the German Democratic Republic but moved in 1990 to New York to live with her father, a computer expert with the UN, and sister Dalena Simon. After finishing school she moved back to Germany to study acting at the "Academy of Performing Arts Ernst Busch" in Berlin where she received her diploma in 1999. Her first film Zornige Küsse received an award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1999. Simon was named European Shooting Star (i.e., best newcomer) at the 2004 Berlinale [1]. In the same year she played Polly in Bertolt Brechts Dreigroschenoper at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Her TV movie Kleine Schwester was nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2005 [2].
