Mario Kart Wii (working title) is a kart racing video game for the Nintendo Wii console. The game was stated to be released within the first three months of 2008. However, no official release date has been stated and it has been suggested the game could be seen in Europe this year.[2]

Nintendo first started talking about the Wii iteration of Mario Kart in Nintendo Power. The creator for Mario Kart DS was asked in an interview about future developments of the series, and he said that it would possibly begin work on the Revolution version (The code name for the Wii before the console was released) soon.[citation needed]

It was officially announced and showed the first footage at the E3 2007 Media and Business Summit.[3] Like Mario Kart DS was a main Wi-Fi title for the Nintendo DS, Mario Kart Wii will also be a major Wi-Fi title for the Wii.

The game will be packaged with a new Wii Wheel accessory for the Wii Remote controller, which can be used to enhance the impression of driving. It has also been confirmed to feature online functionality.

Gameplay

Mario Kart Wii will return to the single-car style gameplay, unlike its console predecessor, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. The game will have new tracks and will include those from older games, including Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. In the video unveiled at E3, twelve racers are seen at the starting line. Previous games only had eight racers at the start line. There is no confirmation that this is final; however, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime did mention that more racers would be able to compete.

Characters

Many of past characters from past games will also be returning. Currently, only a few characters have been confirmed by the E3 2007 briefing. Each of them also has his or her own vehicles, from a painted Muscle car-like Hot rod for Waluigi to a baby stroller for Baby Mario.

Online

This game has been confirmed to support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. It will support an online racing mode and an online battle mode, both of them regulars of the series. This was announced during Nintendo's E3 2007 Media Briefing. Unlike the online component for Mario Kart DS, more than four players may be able to play each other online at once.
