name confusion

Is this the same animal as Sphiggurus villosus as in the article on Orange-spined Hairy Dwarf Porcupine? If not why is Sphiggurus spinosus listed under the same common name in the New World porcupine article)? WolfmanSF 05:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is not the same animal. Woods and Kilpatrick (2005) use "Paraguaian Hairy Dwarf Porcupine" as a common name for Sphiggurus spinosus and "Orange-spined Hairy Dwarf Porcupine" for S. villosus. That seems most reasonable to me. "South American Tree Porcupine" is ridiculously vague for S. spinosus. --Aranae 22:28, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Is Sphiggurus paragayensis, listed as "Paraguay Hairy Dwarf Porcupine" in the New World porcupine article, also distinct from Sphiggurus spinosus? WolfmanSF 07:49, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
