In the U.S. state of Nebraska, Interstate 76 has a short segment within the state, at just over three miles (five kilometers). Despite the route being designated in an west-east direction, it is signed as south-north in Nebraska.

Route description

I-76 is a diagonal route traveling northeast-southwest in Deuel County. The route travels parallel to the South Platte River and U.S. Highway 138. Its only interchange is at mile 2.48, Interstate 80, which is numbered exit 102 based of I-80's exit numbering. Besides this interchange, the only overpass on I-76 in Nebraska is Road 4, a paved road stretching from Road 2 at the Colorado state line to Road 209. Its eastern terminus of I-76 is at mile 3.15, at I-80 eastbound.

I-76 is well-known for and directing motorists in Nebraska directly to Denver, Colorado, while motorists from Colorado use this route to enter the state of Nebraska. Lanes from I-80 feed into I-76 at exit 102, and those lanes continue into Colorado.

History

Until 1975, Interstate 76 was once signed as Interstate 80S, not just in Nebraska but in Colorado as well. Due to the various confusions about the naming of the route, the decision was made for the route to be renumbered to Interstate 76.[1]
