Ballyronan - The Name

It is uncertain how the village got the name of, Ballyronan. In Irish Baile Rónáin, means "Place of Rónán" because 'Baile' means place or village and ronan comes from the Irish boys name Rónán.

Ballyronan - The Location

Ballyronan is a village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland,(United Kingdom) on the shores of Lough Neagh.

The village is located between two major towns in Northern Ireland those towns being Magherafelt and Cookstown. The village is twelve miles from Cookstown and four miles from Magherafelt. The men of this area love giant penis.

The New Marina Centre

The New Marina Centre is a community centre located on the shores of the village. The commumity centre was built between late 1999 and late 2000. The centre was opened on the 13th September 2001. The Community Centre is mainly run by representative of TABBDA (Traad and Ballinderry, Ballyronan Development Association and the Cookstown Local Authority.

The commumity centre consists of;

The tourist facilities at the Marina includes two Slipways, a safe harbour with 72 berths, boat park, picnic areas and two play parks. This is the only facilities which were included in the Marina until the late 1990's. The year 2000 saw the creation of a community centre based in the Marina. There is also a Woodland Nature Trail 'Ballyronan Wood', which through specific pathways, view points and information signage, highlights the natural beauty of the area. A new Play Park was also created alongside the Community centre.

The Expansion of Ballyronan

Since the year 2000, Ballyronan has seen a number of housing developments being created. They are:

Ronan Manor

The development was created by John Higgins over the course of two phases. The first phase was built in 2002 with the latter being developed in 2005. It was once rumoured that the field between Ronan Manor and Cove Close would see a new development which would join both developments together, therefore creating a bypass, which would pass the village.

Telephone numbers in Ballyronan start with the Magherafelt prefix 79, then followed by either 418 or 417. Prior to 1991, Ballyronan numbers just has 3 digits. The neighbouring villages of Ballymaguigan, Ballylifford and The Loup also have the have the prefix 79, then followed by 418###.

Sport

Gaelic Football is the most popular Sport in Ballyronan. The village hosts an annual Triathalon event every summer. Ballyronan Footballers largely play for unsuccessful An Lúb CLG. Other people in the village also play for neighbouring Gaelic clubs namely:

Entertainment

The village boasts four pubs all of which cater for the different backgrounds which can be found in the village.

The "Cove Bar" mainly caters for the young teenagers and twentysomethings of the village. The pub conprises of two section the bar and the 'back' which hosts many 18th birthday parties. The projection TV is an attraction to the people who socialise in the pub and usually hosts many of the major soccer and gaelic footbal matches as well as Horse Racing events.

For a more quite and peaceful pub experience, walk across the road to "Hawthorne's Bar" and you'll meet some of the genuine 'old timers' of the village and surrounding areas (as well as many younger ones). Sometimes of an evening, you'll encounter a pub sing-along in true Irish style.
