"Laundry Blues" is the first episode of Open All Hours second season.

Plot
Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) is worried because the VAT inspector is coming to his shop for an audit. On the other side of the road, when Nurse Gladys Emamnuel's (Lynda Baron) washing machine breaks, she asks Arkwright if she can use his. Arkwright has to refuse since his washing machine is not even electric. Nurse Gladys storms into the shop and states an ultimatum to Arkwright. If he wants to marry her, he has to upgrade his domestic hardware.

Arkwright goes to the hardware store and asks the owner to deliver him a brand new washing machine. That means just "deliver", not sell, since Arkwright only wants Nurse Gladys to witness the delivery of a new machine. He also agrees to buy an old second hand washing machine and a dryer.

After the "delivery", Granville (David Jason) uses the new (but old) machines, which are very noisy and vibrate a lot. When nurse Gladys enters the shop, she spots the dryer moving across the room, and leaves in a bad mood. The only good news for Arkwright is that the machine is so noisy that the VAT inspector also leaves.

Notes
This episode is the is the first one to feature Maggie Ollerenshaw as Mavis, the customer who just cannot make her mind to decide which product to buy.
