Edwards played college football at NC State and was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005. Edwards worked his way up the depth chart at cornerback and saw his first major action on November 21, 2005 at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. He played well, intercepting one of Brett Favre's passes that he took back 51 yards for a touchdown. Dovonte was a possible reason the Vikings were able to release Ken Irvin and sign a third quarterback, J.T. O'Sullivan, when Daunte Culpepper was lost for the season. Dovonte should remain an important member of the secondary for the Vikings.
At Chapel Hill High School, Edwards had 14 receiving, 2 punt returns and 1 kickoff returns for touchdowns. He was also a 3-time all-conference selection in basketball.

College
Edwards was putting up a battle with rookie Cedric Griffin for the nickleback spot on the team when he broke his arm in training camp and was lost for the season, therefore he did not play at all in 2006 and looked to come back in 2007 and battle for the nickel and dime spot on the team along with Charles Gordon and Ronyell Whittaker. However he appeared to be the odd man out instead and ended up among the final roster cuts on September 2, 2007; he was however claimed by the New York Giants to fill their nickel or dime spot.
