Policies and activities

CNA/NNOC recently clashed with SEIU over an agreement between SEIU and Catholic Healthcare Partners of Ohio. CNA/NNOC labeled the election a "sham" and encouraged nurses and other staff to vote no to forming a union with SEIU. SEIU and Catholic Healthcare Partners cancelled the election for 8,000 workers in 9 Ohio hospitals on whether to have SEIU representation.

CNA/NNOC does not have any plans to hold an election of their own. [2]

The California Nurses Association is a leading advocate of single payer healthcare in California and the United States. CNA/NNOC is working to build a national movement of direct care Registered Nurses to advocate for improved patient care conditions, guaranteed healthcare, and enhanced standards for direct care RNs.

The CNA was instrumental in gaining passage of legislation, over the opposition of the California Hospital Association, that required hospitals in California to reduce the patient-to-nurse ratio to 5-to-1. Under DeMoro's leadership, the CNA took the lead role in mobilizing opposition to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's pro-business, anti-union policies in 2005.

The CNA endorsed Ralph Nader in the 2000 U.S. presidential election.
