People who write family histories often pay for publication through Xlibris, since family histories usually have no market potential outside a particular family, often selling fewer than ten copies. Thus, the major commercial presses have no interest in publishing family histories and Xlibris can accommodate this type of publishing.

Xlibris is a Philadelphia-based vanity press and on-demand printing services provider. Xlibris gives creative control and ownership rights to the author.

The name is a derivation of the Latin term ex libris which means "from the library of".

An early supporter of Xlibris and the industry in general is sci-fi author Piers Anthony[1]. In December 1997, he and his wife became a part of Xlibris as venture capitalists. Later Xlibris formed a partnership with Random House.

Xlibris uses multiple printers depending on the requirements of each manuscript.
