"My Neck, My Back (Lick It)" became a breakthrough hit, charting at number forty-two on the Billboard Hot 100. The video was edited in order to play on networks such as BET and for radio due to its hardcore explicit lyrics which refer to cunnilingus and anilingus. The single was also featured on the soundtrack of Fox television hit series "Dark Angel". The album was certified gold by the RIAA in September 2002 for selling 800,000 copies in the U.S. and over 900,000 worldwide.

2003–2006: Going independent

After years of touring, Khia's second album, Gangstress, was released in July 2006 on her own independent record label, Thug Misses Entertainment (or T.M.E. Records). The album was released in a clean and explicit version. She also helped develop background instrumentals or "beats" for the 2006 project, but all lyrics have been written by the self-proclaimed "Queen of the South" herself.

It has spawned two singles, "For the Love of Money" and "Snatch the Cat Back".
