Joseph Palmer (1791—1894) was a member of the Fruitlands commune, and an associate of Louisa May Alcott and other Transcendentalists.[1] He appears as the character, Moses White in the Louisa May Alcott’s Transcendental Wild Oats. He is also notable for serving a year in jail in Fitchburg, MA, for the crime of wearing a full beard.[2] [3] Palmer was also a founder of the Leominster and Harvard Benevolent Association with Charles Lane.[4] Palmer was a veteran of the War of 1812.
