Revision as of 12:49, 12 June 2008
A by-election to the UK Parliament constituency of Haltemprice and Howden will be held in 2008 following the resignation of Shadow Home Secretary David Davis.[1]. Davis intends to stand for re-election as the Conservative candidate.[2] The election is expected to be held on 10 July 2008.[2]
The resignation was a statement made in support of civil liberties after the government narrowly won (by a majority of nine votes, amid accusations of horse-trading on unrelated matters in order to secure the majority) a vote in the House of Commons to allow people to be detained for 42 days without charge. The by-election will occur sometime after the Henley by-election, 2008.
Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has announced that his party will not field a candidate in the by-election.[3]
