On July 5, 2008, a performance by Cheryl Wheeler shocked and traumatised the audience with its obscene, hateful remarks about Christians, aboriginals, and victims of childhood sexual abuse. Wheeler included the remarks in whimiscal songs, intending to ridicule people in a manner so unacceptable, several hundred patrons left the venue in disgust. Wheeler also aimed specific insults at members of the audience, prompting at least one person to verbally engage her with the words, "Fuck you." Wheeler then demanded the person be removed from the venue by police, which demand was immediately met, and approved of by the directors of the festival. When patrons complained of this blatantly unfair treatment, one official was heard to remark that most Canadians are, "...too stupid to get the part about sit down and shut up." It was later learned the person Wheeler demanded be removed is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, who was instantly traumatised by her insensitive, hateful lyrics, and at this time it appears he will require months of additional therapy. The directors of the festival have no interest in issuing any sort of apology, or any statement regarding Wheeler, or her illegal, hate-crime worthy lyrics. |
