Milagros D. Ibe: Mathematics Educator, Teacher, Academic

Milagros D. Ibe (1931 - ) is a multi-awarded teacher-educator in mathematics education. Dr. Ibe devised numerous teacher training programs and research studies that led to the development of policies in basic and higher education ^[1] in the Philippines. According to the Science Education Institute of the Philippines, "she has left a legacy of teaching with compassion to the young generation of math and science teachers" and "her ability to simplify esoteric concepts into lessons easily understood by young minds significantly helped in demystifying mathematics." ^[2].

Dr. Ibe was Vice Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman when she assisted Dr. John Cleverley of the University of Sydney, in conducting courses and publishing books on values education sponsored by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in 1988^[3].

The Dolores Hernandez Lecture Series in science education was started by Dr. Ibe during the start of her term as Director of the University of the Philippines - Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP-ISMED) in 1993, to be a monthly Friday afternoon event as part of the Institution's extension activities. The series continued through the years during and after her term, though much less frequently. In December of 1995, Dr. Ibe (with Jose Fadul) represented the Philippines in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) ^[4].

Presently, Dr. Ibe, already in her mid-70s, is the Dean of Graduate School of Miriam College in Quezon City, Philippines ^[5] and concurrently professor emeritus in the College of Education of the University of the Philippines, where she is very active in promoting, among others, mathematics education. Her name means miracle in Spanish and she is indeed a miracle and a miracle worker to her students and colleagues.
