Mathew D. Staver, J.D., is an American lawyer, academic, professor, and former Seventh Day Adventist pastor. Founding member and Chairman of Liberty Counsel since 1989 and dean of Liberty University School of Law since 2006, Staver received his B.A. in theology from Southern Missionary College (now called Southern Adventist University), his M.A. in Religion from Andrews University (another Adventist institution), and his J.D. from the University of Kentucky. He has argued before the Supreme Court of the United States twice and has argued before most of the federal courts of appeals. [1]
Controversy
Staver became the permanent Dean of the Liberty University School of Law under suspicious circumstances. After the resignation of Dean Bruce Green in 2006, the University publicized its search for a new law school dean and that potential applicants had till late November of 2006 to submit their resumes for consideration. Liberty University failed to follow its own process and selected Staver in October 2006, failing to give potential applicants time to submit their resumes for consideration.
