Conversion scripts
Conversion? The maths, although tedious, is only algebra and trigonometry. Work your way through this lot:
- Introduction - includes link to a spreadsheet
- convert.c - both way conversions. This converted very easily into oscoor_a.htm (see next link) so would probably convert to other scripts equally easily
- The javascript that template:oscoor calls - converts Grid Refs to lat/long. Includes links to more C code at York and the Ordnance Survey guide to conversion
- Egil's code for what template:coor calls - transversemercator.php is the one of interest. Ie. converts lat/long to Grid Refs
- Ordnance Survey spreadsheet - I have never got into this to understand it
- Geotools - an open source Java GIS toolkit - only 5 Mbytes of source code for you to study - if you speak Java
- My Furl may contain other stuff
Since you like to position your dots precisely, you need to be aware that "coor" and "oscoor" are both likely to give 140 metre discrepancies between their coordinates and those used in other places, eg. multimap - see note in this paragraph.

It is sung by The Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Porter, KCB (First Lord of the Admiralty) with the female chorus of the First Lord's sisters, cousins and aunts echoing the last lines of each verse. (It is almost as though Gilbert anticipated that the operetta would become very popular with amateur companies - such a chorus can provide parts for all females in the company who have not been given a named part and can accommodate all ages!) In the first production George Grossmith played Sir Joseph.
The song viciously satirises William Henry Smith.
