The school was founded in 1954 as Greenhill Secondary School, at Kings Road, Herne Bay. A year later the school moved to its present site in Bullockstone Road. On September 1st 1999 the school became a Foundation school and control was passed from Kent County Council to the Board of Governors. Exactly three years later on September 1st 2002 the school became a Specialist school and Sports College. Year groups consist of year 7-13. Dr C. Owen is headteacher.

The school has a number of key students who have performed astonishingly throughout their school career; they have moved through the school years and have broken records with exam results every single year. They currently resied in year 12, the best year the school has ever had, and are predicted to break even more records.

Key students include; Rory Bullock, Rex Erby, Harvey Gasson, Richard Wade, Jennifer Hoskins, Annabelle Letten, Eddie Carter, Zachary Janes, Conor Gibbs, Joe Hunter etc.

Herne Bay High Specialist School and Sports College is a mixed ability Foundation school, with designated Sports College status situated in Herne Bay, Kent, England. The school currently has on roll over 1,500 students.
