The million pound bank note is a short story by Mark Twain.

Plot

Heanry Adams is penniless and homeless in England in the 1900s, when he is shockingly turned into the main character in a bet between two rich brother, named Oliver and Roderick Montpelier. The two brothers invite him in and give him an envelope. They say it contains some money. Adams leaves and opens the envelope he finds out it is a bank note worth a million pounds sterling.

There is a letter explaining the bet to Heanry. It says Oliver believes that the existence of the note will enable the possessor (Heanry) to obtain whatever he needs, while Roderick says that it would have to be spent for it to be of any use.

Adams gets everything he wants with out using the bank note, new clothes a penthouse apartment. He falls for a young lady by the name of Portia Lansdowne, who is the niece of the Duchess of Cromarty.
