Dersim in turkish Kurdistan, in 1937-1938, approximately 40.000-70.000 Alevi Kurds was killed and thousands were taken into exile, Dersim was depopulated. A key component of the turkification process was the policy of massive poulation resettlement. Referring to the main policy document in this context, the 1934 law on resettlement, a policy targeting the region of Dersim as one of its first test cases, with disastrous consequences for the local population. The Dersim Genocide was on one hand a continuation of the Kızılbash extermination of the Ottoman times and also an extermination of an ethnically distinct and separate people from Turks.
