Smiley Face is a 2007 comedy film. It is the ninth feature film directed by Gregg Araki and was written by Dylan Haggerty.
Plot
One woman's day goes all to pot in this resinous comedy from independent filmmaker Gregg Araki. Jane (Anna Faris) is a college dropout and aspiring actress who suffers from a certain lack of ambition, doubtlessly reinforced by her fondness for marijuana. One morning, Jane wakes with a busy day ahead of her — she has a big audition, she has to pay the electric bill on her apartment to prevent the power from being shut off, and she needs to pick up some marijuana after paying her debt to her dealer — and decides to take the edge off her anxieties by getting a little stoned.
Under the influence, the cupcakes her roommate Steve (Danny Masterson) has made for his friends to enjoy at the weekend's sci-fi convention look too good to resist, and she gobbles them down. What Jane doesn't realize until it's too late is that the baked goods were laced with some especially strong marijuana, and what starts as a pleasant buzz turns into a world-class high that refuses to go away. As Jane struggles to make her way through the day, fate keeps throwing her into strange and surreal situations involving police officers, Steve's lovesick best friend, and a rare original manuscript of The Communist Manifesto.

Reception
Smiley Face premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and received by a very small release where in Los Angeles it had a week long run at the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica.[1] The film was released to DVD on January 8, 2008.[2] It also toured around British cinemas in summer 2008 as part of the 22nd London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
In his review for the New York Times, Matt Zoller Seitz praised Faris' "freakishly committed performance as Jane F. [that] suggests Amy Adams’s princess from Enchanted dropped into a Cheech and Chong movie".[3] Andrew O'Hehir writes in his review for Salon, "Smiley Face, has a wonderful performance by Anna Faris and one of the all-time great stoner monologues in movie history".[4] In her review for Cinematical, Monika Bartyzel writes, "Araki's comedy gives us the best of many comedic worlds in an incessantly funny, easily-quotable serving. From discussions of Marxism to love of lasagna, Smiley Face serves it all - with some weed and a very, very stoned smile".[5] However, S. James Snyder, in his review for the New York Sun, wrote, "If this is meant as a lighthearted change of pace for Mr. Araki, after Mysterious Skin, then perhaps he took things too far in the opposite direction. This isn't just light and fluffy; it floats away".[6]
