Revision as of 16:02, 17 January 2009
Elections to Barnsley Council in South Yorkshire, England were held on 1 May, 2008. One third of the council was up for election and the Labour party held overall control of the council. Overall turnout was 34.78%.[1]
Before the election it had been thought that the Labour party might lose overall control of the council but they held on by only one seat.[2][3] They lost two seats to the Barnsley Independent Group and one to the Conservatives but gained one seat from the Liberal Democrats.[4] The losses for the Labour party were blamed on government policies, such as on immigration and the abolition of the 10p income tax band, by the leader of the council, Steve Houghton, who was himself re-elected for Cudworth ward.[5]
After the election, the composition of the council was
- Labour 32
- Barnsley Independent Group 22
- Conservative 6
- Independent 2
- Liberal Democrat 1
