Alice Glass (born April 28, 1988)[1] is the lead vocalist and lyricist of Crystal Castles.
Biography
Glass was born in 1988 in Toronto. In an NME interview, she stated that at the age of 14, she changed her name and age, and ran away from home to live in a community of punks and drug addicts[citation needed]. She claimed this move was "due to an early existential crisis. I wanted to live primitively with no money and no shelter." A week after she turned 15, she was approached by Ethan Kath who had seen her play in her noise girlband, Fetus Fatale in Toronto's Y bar. Kath was reportedly impressed by her performance, claiming at the the time he thought he had found the "missing ingredient" to his music. Kath handed her a CD with 60 instrumental tracks of which she recorded vocals for five. When they went to the recording studio, the mic check was accidentally recorded. This went on to become the band's selling single, Alice Practice.[citation needed]
Personality
During the band's interview with NOW magazine Alice disappeared and neither Ethan or the band's manager could contact Alice.[2] Crystal Castles was infamously shut down at Glastonbury 2008 after Glass climbed a speaker stand just before Alice Practice and was swallowed by the crowd during Yes No.[3]
Style
In an interview with the Independent newspaper Glass stated that her style is "more grandmother's leftovers than heroin chic."[4] On tour she usually wears white Converse Chuck Taylors, knee-length pencil skirts, tights, black t-shirts, black hoodies, cardigans and a black leather jacket. In 2008 she topped the NME cool list. [5]
