AC Flora High School is an high school in Columbia, South Carolina. The school has won several athletic and academic state championships, and is consistently ranked as one of the top high schools in South Carolina.

Notable Events

  • On October 4th, 2007, two students from Flora were arrested on charges of disturbing the orderly operation of a school. The students had hung a noose from a tree in a fashion similar to the events that occurred involving the Jena Six. [1] The incident occurred during lunch, and the students were promptly arrested and suspended from school, with a pending expulsion hearing. About 10 minutes before the school day ended, principal Richard McClure made a schoolwide televised announcement explaining the situation, and encouraged tolerance and peace. Regardless, the Richland County Sheriff's Department has announced that they do not intend to try the students for a hate crime. "What they did disturbed the operation of the school," said Richland County sheriff's spokesman Chris Cowan, explaining why the actions were not considered a hate crime. "We believe they did a stupid thing."[2] It is notable that one of the perpetrators was white, and one was African-American.[3]
