'''Police Training Exercise'''

On Tuesday July 14th, 2009 members of the public flooded the Tasmania Police with calls after believing a police training exercise involving a shooting at Northgate Shopping Centre was real. Many Tasmanians believed an armed gunman was on the loose after overhearing transmissions on a police radio channel.

The radio transmissions were part of a training exercise conducted at the Tasmania Police Academy which involved a number of transmissions on the police radio channel and were not connected to any real events. Some transmissions were overheard by members of the public who were not aware they related to a training exercise. This resulted in a number of phone calls by concerned members of the public to the police communications unit.<ref>http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25784855-421,00.html</ref>
