The Liberty High School Marching Patriots

The 100 member group has won many sweepstakes and 1st place awards in band competitions throughout California since its beginning in 1999. In 2002, the band competed in the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) State Championships receiving 4th place overall in Division 4A. In 2004, the band competed in the Western Band Association WBA State Championships receiving 4th place overall in the 1A/2A/3A Division Finals with the colorguard claiming the High Sweepstakes award in Auxiliary. It received the highest member count of 150 members in 2003. The Marching Patriots continues to receive high scores and 1st place awards today. They also have a wind symphony, symphonic band, concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, and colorguard. The Percussion Ensemble caused a huge upset in 2008 when they defeated the 5-time champion Bakersfield High School winter percussion for the gold medal at the 2008 PPAACC Championships. The colorguard won 3rd place at the WGI Las Vegas Regional in 2003 in the Scholastic A Division.

Band Directors

  • Jason Kuyper (1999-2005)
  • Mark McGuire (2005-present)

Field Shows

  • 1999 - Sweet Land of Liberty

-Music Repertoire: "Moonlight Serenade / Sentimental Journey", "Swing Swing, Swing", "Taps" and "God Bless America"

  • 2000 - 007

-Music Repertoire: "GoldenEye", "Tomorrow Never Dies", and "James Bond Theme". Received its first ever sweepstakes award - best auxiliary (88.4)

-An all time high of sweepstakes awards in Band, Percussion, Auxiliary, and Visual in the bands history.

-Faced a high-level of competition that year. At one competition, the band was runner-up for the overall Sweepstakes Band award within a 8-point margin of state and national champions Etiwanda High School (6A), and Liberty was in a lower division (4A). They also caused one of the biggest upsets in competition history when they participated at Centennial High School's SCSBOA-junction event "Music in Motion" Competition locally, where they swiped Percussion (84.60), Auxiliary (85.75), Visual (180), General Effect (324), and Band (89.05), where West Bakersfield High School and Stockdale High School are dominant in the band category. They were invited to compete in the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association State Championships where they placed 4th overall (79.79).

  • 2003 - Class Act

-Music Repertoire: "Teenage Wasteland", "Hot for Teacher", and "School's Out". The highest member count in the band's history with 170 members, the band fared well in competitions, especially in the auxiliary area, but unfortunately, not in the first place or sweepstakes awards as they faced serious competition as a 5A level band.

  • 2004 - The Bullfighter

-Competing in Western Band Association competitions in the AAA division, the band reconquered top sweepstakes prizes in High Percussion, High Auxiliary, High General Effect, High Visual, High Music, and High Band. They also received high marks in SCSBOA competitions with sweepstakes in Auxiliary, Visual, and General Effect. They were invited to compete in the Western Band Association A/AA/AAA Championships where they were 3rd in the prelims and 4th in the finals (85.55) were they were 2.2 points short of winning the bronze medal; but the colorguard won the award for best auxiliary in both the prelims and finals.
