The Kanyakubj (or Kanaujia) Brahmins derive their name from the Kannauj region of Uttar Pradesh.

In the 19th and 20th national convention of Kanyakubja Brahmins by Kanyakubja Mahati Sabha, in 1926 and 1927 respectively, it reiterated Bhumihar Brahmins to be Kanyakubja Brahmins and appealed for unity among Kanyakubja Brahmins whose different branches included Sanadhya, Pahadi, Jujhoutia, Gangaputra, Saryupareen, Chattisgadhi, Bhumihar and different Bengali Brahmins.<ref>{{cite book

Common surnames of Kanyakubj Brahmins include Pandey, Dixit, Mishra, Shukla, Vajpayee, Awasthi etc.

Ever since the great Indian uprising of 1857, which included Mangal Pandey & Chandrashekhar Azad as spearheads, brahmins in general in Uttar Pradesh were victimised by the then British administration. Mobile courts held hearings under trees on the thick branches of which young brahmins members of their community were hanged in public. This was to deter Indians, to not to partake in the (then) Independence struggle against the British.

As a fallout of such mass hangings, a sizable population of kanyakubj brahmins migrated, almost overnight, from their homes and fields in Uttar Pradesh, to the relative secluded areas of Madhya Pradesh, like Hoshangabad & Itarsi, only to settle down there and lead peaceful lives. Their descendants then prospered and built a reputation for theselves in the fields of education, law, medicine and trading.

Kanyakubj Brahmins communities are found in areas like Kanpur, Kannauj, etc. which are also the prominent hubs of their social and cultural activities. A number of dedicated organizations here work towards the well being of the society in general and kanyakubj community in particular.
