At first the capital city of Malta was Mdina (Arabic Medina, Italian "Il Borgo" later Notabile), but when the Knights of Saint John were granted the Maltese Islands, the city of Birgu suddenly gained a greater importance and became the European portal of post-Muslim Malta. All of the Order of Saint John's langues were based in Birgu and until the "new" city of Valletta was built, Birgu was in effect the capital city of Malta. The Fort Saint Angelo, seat of the Maltese version of "El cid" (Maltese "Is-Sid"), is located on one of Birgu's promontories commanding the best view of the Maltese Grand Harbour where in 1283 the Angevins lost a crucial battle to the Aragonese . |

St. Lawrence's Church is an old Church situated in Birgu in Malta.
In the 'Rollo' (inventory) of the benefices of the churches and chapels in Malta and Gozo, held by Bishop de Mello in 1436, ten established chapels are mentioned, amongst which the Church of San Lorenzo a Mare.
When the Order of Saint John first settled in Malta in 1530, all of the Order of Saint John's langues were based in Birgu and the natural choice fell on the Church of Saint Laurence to be used as the Order’s first Conventual Church in Malta.
