Amber Rubarth

Amber Rubarth (born September 21, 1982) is an unsigned Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter who has released three full-length albums as a solo artist, and one album as part of a collaboration (The Paper Raincoat).

Biography

Rubarth grew up in Reno, Nevada, and started playing music professionally in 2004.[1] Prior to entering the music business she undertook an apprenticeship in wood sculpture, for which she used a chainsaw to create sculptures.[2] After three years she reached Journeyman status and following the advice of the head instructor she quit the apprenticeship and learned how to play the guitar in order to embark on her dream of becoming a full-time musician.[3] She has been writing songs since her teens, and was described by The Huffington Post as "part of the new old-soul generation".[4]

After starting out playing gigs at open mics, local coffee shops and small venues, Rubarth moved on to touring the US and also performed several tours of Europe.[1] When playing live she plays piano in addition to a hollow body Washburn H-15 guitar .[5] Her song Washing Day (co-written with Adam Levy) won 1st Place in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition in the 'Lyrics only' category, judged by Tom Waits, Brian Wilson and Robert Smith.[6][7] Washing Day was also a top 5 winner in the acoustic/folk category of the 9th Annual Great American Song Contest.[8] On May 8, 2008, Bob Boilen chose Rubarth's song "You Will Love This Song" from her second album "New Green Lines" for his NPR show All Things Considered. He said he was "attracted by her honesty and humor."[9]. On August 26, 2009, Tom Robinson featured the song on his BBC Radio show "Fresh On the Net" in the UK. [10]

A handmade collectors edition of Rubarth's latest solo album, Good Mystery, was released on August 21, 2009,[11] to a sold out audience at Joe's Pub in New York City. The collectors edition is a hand-crafted birch wood box with a red wax hummingbird seal on a sliding lid top. The album rose to the #1 best seller spot on Amie Street for digital sales on its release day of August 21, 2009 and stayed in the top spot for 2 weeks. [12]

In May 2009 Rubarth joined Jason Reeves and Brendan James to create "The Vespa Experiment," a musical tour along the California coast in which the three artists traveled on Vespa mopeds, camped, and did community awareness activities for 13 days to spread the message of fighting global warming. [13] In September 2009, she toured America and Canada supporting Gary Jules and Josh Radin.[14] She has also shared the stage with many other well known artists including Loudon Wainwright III, Martin Sexton, Lisa Loeb, Roger McGuinn, Sara Bareilles, Jason Reeves and Colbie Caillat.

Many of her fans have discovered her music on MySpace where she has over 1.5 million plays and was featured in the Top 100 Independent Artists. [15]

The Paper Raincoat

In addition to her solo work Rubarth, with songwriter (and long-time collaborator) Alex Wong, formed a collaborative project called The Paper Raincoat. Rubarth explained in an interview with The Boston Globe that her solo work tends to be more personal, whereas The Paper Raincoat's songs are more imaginative, involving fictional characters.[16] Their debut EP (Safe in the Sound) was featured as an iTunes Indie Spotlight Artist.[17]. In the fall of 2009, they are playing shows supporting Vienna Teng,[18] and their music was the subject of CNET's 'The 404' podcast.[19] The album "The Paper Raincoat" was released in October 2009.
