Devendra Kula Vellalar cannot be considered as (true) Vellalars because they have no connection with the Velirs/Vellalars of ancient Tamil Kingdoms (mentionned in the Tamil Sangam).

Velirs/Vellalars were Feudal Landlords, Land Owners, Ministers, Army Chiefs... Whereas caste such as Devendra Kula Vellars were originally cultivators, paysant and then lately became farmers.

Real Vellalars account for about 5% of the whole Tamil population. They are the only ones who can claim Kshatriya status.
