John H. Sykes is a prominent Tampa Bay area business man and founder of Sykes Enterprises Incorporated (NASDAQ listing SYKE). Mr. Sykes was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and attended High Point University and Queens University of Charlotte, as well as Rollins College. He currently serves a Chairman Emeritus of Sykes Inc. and remains active in the Tampa Business community.
Career
Mr. Sykes founded Sykes Enterprises in 1977 in Charlotte and later moved the company to its present headquarters in Tampa, Florida in 1993. Sykes Enterprises is a global leader[citation needed] in outsourced customer contact management solutions and services in business process outsourcing. It currently serves the major markets of North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. Prior to founding Sykes Enterprises, Mr. Sykes served as Senior Vice President in charge of Corporate Development for the CDI Corporation.
Mr. Sykes has also branched out into the thoroughbred horse breeding business. He purchased Clover Leaf Farms II in Ocala, Florida in 1997. The farm is outfitted as a facility designed for the breeding, development and training of thoroughbreds. It also focuses specifically on sale preparation and resale. The farm made headlines for selling I'll Get Along, the dam of the thoroughbred champion Smarty Jones. Sykes sold Clover Leaf Farms II for a profit in 2007.
Awards and honors
Mr. Sykes has been recognized by numerous organizations for his accomplishments in the entrepreneurial field and community involvement. Some of these awards include the 1996 Florida Entrepreneur of the Year, and the 1997 Innovator of the Year award. In 1997 he was recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Tampa Police Department; and he received the 1998 Citizen of the Year award by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Officers. Also, in 1998, Mr. Sykes was inducted into the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame and was awarded the Florida Enterprise medal by the Merchants Association. In 2003 he received the Humanitarian Award from the Judeo Christian Health Clinic and in 2004 received the Senior Philanthropy Award. Mr. Sykes was also inducted in to the Hall of Fame of the International Sales and Marketing organization in April 2005.[citation needed]
University of Tampa
Mr. Sykes made his permanent mark on the city of Tampa when, in 1997, he made a 10 million dollar donation to the University of Tampa. He topped this gift in 2000 by donating an additional 28 million dollars, thought to be the largest gift ever given to a Florida University as of that time.[citation needed] In honor of his generous contributions and in recognition of his achievements, the University of Tampa re-named its College of Business the John H. Sykes College of Business. He also holds two honorary doctorates from the University of Tampa one in Business Administration and another in Humane Letters.
