Rock & Chips is a British comedy-drama and a prequel to the situation comedy Only Fools and Horses. It is the second spin-off from the original series, after The Green Green Grass. The sitcom story focused on the lives of local villain Freddie Robdal, Joan and Reg Trotter and their teenage son Del Boy in the 1960s. The pilot was ninety minutes in duration and aired on BBC One on 24 January 2010.[2] It was produced by Shazam Productions and the BBC.
Background
In 2003, it was reported that John Sullivan was developing a prequel to Only Fools And Horses, entitled Once Upon a Time in Peckham, which would show Del, Rodney, Trigger, Boycie and Denzil as youngsters in the 1960s, and have a prominent role for Del and Rodney's parents.[4] In 2009, it was again reported that the BBC were considering commissioning the show,[5] and John Sullivan told The Mail on Sunday that he was planning a prequel to Only Fools and Horses which would star Nicholas Lyndhurst as Freddie "The Frog" Robdal, a local criminal and Rodney's biological father. Robdal was the focus of the episode "The Frog's Legacy".[6]
On 3 July 2009, the BBC announced that the spin-off would be titled Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n' Chips, and would be a 90-minute comedy drama.[7][8] Filming began in October 2009, with transmission planned for 2010.
On 14 January, 2010, a BBC press release confirmed the show's title had been changed to Rock & Chips.[2]
On 24 January, 2010 , the show aired on BBC1 at 9.00pm to 10.30pm - 90 Minutes Special. There is widespread speculation of the BBC commissioning a second 90-minute special, confirmation has yet to be made.

Set in the 1960s, Joan Trotter is in an unhappy marriage with the work-shy Reg, with whom she has a teenage son, Derek ("Del Boy"). However, the reappearance in Peckham of bank robber, "art connoisseur" and womaniser Freddie Robdal, recently released after a ten year prison sentence, would bring about changes in Joan's life. Rock & Chips centred on the relationships between the glamorous Joan Trotter, Del's useless father Reg, the safe-cracker Freddie Robdal and the young Del Boy. It featured teenage incarnations of some of the original show's regular characters, including Boycie, Trigger, Denzil, and Jumbo Mills. The Trotter family haven't yet moved into their flat in Nelson Mandela House, but there are some recognisable settings such as the mean streets of Peckham and the Nag's Head circa 1960.[11] |
