William J. "Bill" Montford (born August 22, 1947) currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Florida Association of District School Superintends[1] in Tallahassee, FL. Montford is currently running for Florida Senate District 6, to replace incumbent Sen. Al Lawson who will term out in 2010[2].


Background

Montford was born in Marianna, Florida (Jackson County), raised in Blountstown, Florida (Calhoun County), is an alumnus of Chipola College in Marianna, and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Florida State University in Tallahassee. For the past four decades, Bill Montford has been actively engaged in public education in Leon County and the Big Bend area.

Montford began a life-long career as an educator because of his deep desire to truly make a difference in people’s lives. He began his teaching career as a math teacher at Belle Vue Middle School in Tallahassee, FL in 1969 and went on to serve as a school administrator for 26 years, seven years as an assistant principal and 18 years as a high school principal at Godby High School and Lincoln High School.

In 1982, Montford successfully ran for Leon County Commission serving two consecutive terms. Montford’s steadfast dedication and commitment to ensuring a strong educational foundation for students, led to his decision to run for Superintendent of Leon County Schools in 1996. For Montford, this was an opportunity to utilize his leadership skills to effect positive, strategic change at the district level and improve the educational experience for all Leon County students, while simultaneously molding Leon County into the premier school district that it is today.

Montford currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS); working closely with state legislative leadership in the fight for quality education for all Floridians.

Public Service

Montford serves on a multitude of local and statewide boards including: the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Chairs the Chamber’s Governmental Affair Committee; The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science; Challenger Learning Center, the Florida Center for Performing Arts and Education, and The Village Square. He was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and the Legislative Committee on Intergovernmental Relations.[3]

Bill Montford has dedicated his life to serving others. Through his roles as an educator, an administrator and a government official; Bill has worked tirelessly throughout his career to a make a difference in the lives of northwest Floridians.

Personal

Montford resides in Tallahassee, Florida with his wife Jane – who is in her 23rd year as a public school teacher currently teaching first grade at Gilchrist Elementary School. Bill and Jane have two children – William J. Montford IV (Bill) and Katherine Montford Peters. Bill (IV) and his wife Emily have two sons – William J. Montford V (Jake) and Henry James Montford and are anticipating the arrival of their third son in February 2010. Katherine and her husband Kevin have a daughter, Eleanor Jane (Ellie Jane).
