"Get Sexy"
Song

"Get Sexy" is a 2009 single performed by English girl group Sugababes, written by Phillip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars and produced by American production outfit the Smeezingtons (composed of Lawrence and Mars) for the band's seventh studio album, Sweet 7 (see 2009 in music). It features an interpolation of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy", composed by Christopher Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, and Robert Manzoli.

Background

The song was the album's opening track, and was released as its lead single at the end of August 2009. It is also the last single from the group to feature original founding member Keisha Buchanan, leaving the Sugababes with no original members left. Her replacement, Jade Ewen, re-recorded the track and the re-recorded version was featured on the compilation, Now 74 as well as on Sweet 7.

Reception

Digital Spy awarded the song 4/5 stars and said: "Get Sexy' is a dancefloor stomper that nestles somewhere between 'Boom Boom Pow' and 'Bonkers' in its blend of electropop, techno and R&B sounds. It may not be massively original, nor an instant classic to rival 'About You Now' or 'Push the Button', but with a Right Said Fred-sampling hook, a thundering chorus and plenty of attitude - most noticeably from Amelle - it returns Sugababes right to the forefront of the pop landscape.[2]

Chart performance

During the first week of its release, according to the UK midweek chart, "Get Sexy" was ahead of its nearest competitor, "Run This Town", by Jay-Z featuring Rihanna and Kanye West, at number one.[3][4] Keisha Buchanan commented that "it's nice that we can roll with the big dogs. I think Jay-Z would be happy for us".[5] Eventually, "Get Sexy" debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart on 6 September 2009. "Get Sexy" marks their first #2-peaking single and the fourth of their eight lead singles not to peak at the top, following "Overload", back in 2000, "Easy" in 2006, and "Girls",[6] released in 2008. On its second week of release, "Get Sexy" managed to stay at #1 for one more week but then fell to #2 the following week.[7]

In Ireland on 4 September 2009, "Get Sexy" debuted and peaked at number two on the Irish Singles Chart, becoming Sugababes' highest charting single in Ireland since "About You Now", and the group's highest debut on the chart since Mutya Buena left the band in 2005. The single was the highest new entry on the chart that week.[8]

Music video

The video was directed by Emil Nava, brother of Jake Nava.[9]

The video features Amelle Berrabah in a bird cage, Heidi Range in a house of mirrors shot at by intense light beams and Keisha Buchanan posing on a couch.[10] During the chorus, the girls can be seen in and through the walls of a triangular box with different coloured lights and standing together with chains around their wrists tying them together. The video ends with the Sugababes in a room covered in graffiti. Popjustice praised the video claiming that it "seems to feature Sugababes 3.0 as 'the full package', and makes sense of this lineup, for the first time. This is a good thing."[11]
