Theemuge is the site of the Supreme Court of Maldives and was the former official residence of the president of the Maldives during the last 10 years of the presidency of Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. It was designed by a Malaysian architect and named after the house of some of the first Muslim rulers of the Maldives from the late Lunar Dynasty (1141 to 1388). Theemuge became the official residence of the president in 1998.

The Presidential Palace is somewhat further from most of the other sights of interest. The Palace was only the official residence of the President but not the office of the president.

Built in an eclectic style, the Presidential Palace was the venue where president occasionally hosted receptions on very special occasions, and also where anyone could greet him at particular times on the occasions of the Islamic Eid. President Mohamed Nasheed announced in January 2009 that Theemuge will no longer serve as the Presidential Palace due to high maintenance costs to keep it as a residential house, but will instead be the National Centre for Linguistic and Historic Research (Dhivehi Bahāi Tārikhah Khidmaiykurā Qaumī Markazu), the National Art Gallery and the National Library (Gaumee Kuthub-haanaa).
