Ali Fredrick Farokhmanesh (born April 16, 1988) is an American basketball player who is currently enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa.
He led Northern Iowa in an upset over #1 seed Kansas in the Round of 32 at the 2010 March Madness tournament. He made a crucial three point shot to give Northern Iowa a solid lead with 30 seconds remaining.[1] This came only two days after hitting the game-winning three point shot against UNLV in the first round of the tournament.
Farokhmanesh is half Iranian-American. His father, Mashallah, was born in Borujerd and was a member of the Iranian men's national volleyball team, before emigrating to the United States in 1977, where he played for professional teams and eventually became a coach.[2] Mashallah married Ali's mother, Cindy Fredrick, who has been the head coach for the women's volleyball team at the University of Iowa since 2004.
