ZAP Sherbrooke (ZAP stands for "Public Access Zone" in French") is a non-profit community wireless network that provides free public wireless Internet access to mobile users in public spaces throughout the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. They use Open-source software and inexpensive off-the-shelf Wi-Fi hardware to share broadband Internet connections. The organization has been founded by seven Sherbrooke institutions composing the University Pole. ZAP Sherbrooke goal is to completely integrate community wireless network in the urban tissue. This initiative also received a provincial recognition for its innovative approach at the provincial IT contest OCTAS 2008 in the category "Technologies at the Service of Communities". [1].

ZAP Sherbrooke works with Sherbrooke city (public parks, arenas, library, city buildings), Universities (Sherbrooke University and Bishop's University), hospitals, cafés, restaurants, bars, stores, community organizations to provide free Internet access in public spaces. As of March 2010, the network has over 35,000 registered users and over 240 live hotspots.[2].

ZAP Sherbrooke advocates creative use of the technology to bring people together and foster a sense of community. Free Wireless for the eastern township is seen as a necessity to provide citizens and visitors a good quality of life as well. The group is partly-volunteer based for most of the access point. Some maintenance services are provided by Revolution Linux for the central management system, the city access points and the backup system.

During the deployment phase 2009 ZAP Sherbrooke contributed to the development of the captive portal suite WifiDog.
