The Piranha is the official satirical newspaper of Trinity College.[1] Formerly known as Piranha! magazine, it was rebranded in 2009. It is a member of Dublin University Publications and is written entirely by students of the university.[2] The current edition claims that it was established in 1863,[3] but official college records state that the publication was founded in 1978.[4]

Production

as of 2010 The Piranha is printed in Berliner (format) format. The newspaper is produced exclusively by students of the University under the direction of a student Editor; due to the increased number of issues and workload, it has become common practice for the editor to take a sabbatical from studies for the year.

In addition to advertising revenue, Trinity News is funded in part by a grant from the Dublin University Publications Committee, but the newspaper claims full editorial independence. It is printed by NWN Media. The print run is 6,000 copies for each issue, which are distributed around Trinity College, various other city centre locations, Froebel College, Blackrock and Marino College. A small number of copies are also distributed by post to alumni and friends of the newspaper.
