Born out of a "mania" for architecture, archimania is an open studio of collaborative designers interested in improving the built environment. It is located in downtown Memphis Tennessee’s South Main Historic Arts District. Since the firm’s inception in 1995, progressive, sustainable, and contextual design has remained at the core of its work. Led by Todd Walker, FAIA[1] and Barry Alan Yoakum, FAIA[2], archimania has become a fixture at the podium of the Memphis, Tennessee, and Gulf States AIA awards[3].
In 2006, the firm gained national exposure when it won the architectural design competition[4] for Conservation Hall at the Tennessee Governor's Mansion. Conservation Hall is a 14,000 square foot subterranean meeting and dining facility located under the front lawn of the Governor’s mansion. It was part of First Lady Andrea Conte’s effort to repair and renovate the antiquated Tennessee Residence[5]. Conservation Hall seats 160 people for state dinners or events. The centerpiece of Conservation Hall is the glass-walled oval atrium and courtyard that opens to the sky[6].
