Ryan Johansen (born July 31, 1992) is a Canadian junior ice hockey player for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was selected forth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. [1] International Scouting Services has ranked Johansen eighth[2].

Personal life

Johansen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and played his first years of minor hockey with the Vancouver Thunderbirds organization until his family moved to the suburb of Port Moody where he played through to bantam hockey.[3] He was offered a full scholarship to play university hockey by Northeastern University but later chose to play in the Western Hockey League instead, costing him his eligibility to play for a National Collegiate Athletic Association school.[4]

Playing career

The Portland Winterhawks selected Johansen with their 7th round pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft, though he opted to play for the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2008–09 to protect his collgege eligibility.[3] He appeared in 42 games for the Vees as a 16-year-old, scoring five goals and twelve assists.[4] Convinced of his ability, the Winterhawks persuaded Johansen to forego university and join their club for the 2009–10 WHL season.[3] In Portland, he joined a line with fellow 2010 prospects Nino Niederreiter and Brad Ross and finshed the year with 25 goals and 69 points in 71 games to help the Winterhawks make the playoffs one year after finishing last in the WHL.[5]

Johansen's coach with Penticton noted that, as one of the younger players of his draft class, his skill was often overlooked.[6] He has rapidly climbed prospect charts for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, starting the year as a potential second round selection,[6] before rising to 16th among North American skaters when NHL Central Scouting released its mid-season ranking.[5] He finished the season as the 10th ranked skater according to Central Scouting and is projected to be a top-20 pick, perhaps as high as top-10.[3] NHL scouts praise his playmaking ability and vision on the ice but believe he needs to show more consistency.[4] Johansen is a fan of San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton and tries to play a similar game.[5]
