The 12th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will premiere on September 22, 2010. The timeslot was moved from 8 p.m. ET to 9 p.m for the NBC broadcast.[1]

This is the first season since the show's debut it won't air with the original Law & Order. Although this season will be airing new episodes preceeding the original show's newest spinoff, Law & Order: Los Angeles.[1]

Production

It was reported on April 12, 2010 that NBC picked up a twelfth season. Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni are set to return as part of the one year deal they struck with NBC before production began on season 11, which included an option for a second year. The two begin shooting new episodes in June and July 2010.[2] Hargitay also said that she would want Benson to have a baby in season 12, saying, "A boyfriend! A baby! I don’t even have to get married. I just want a baby! Give me a baby!"[3]

On June 23, 2010, it was reported by Michael Ausiello that Paula Patton was in "advanced talks" to join the show's 12th season, as a permanent ADA.[4] TV Guide reports Paula Patton will play Assistant District Attorney Mikka Von in multiple episodes, beginning with the fifth episode. She is set to fill the ADA slot left vacant by both Stephanie March (Alexandra Cabot) and guest star Sharon Stone (Jo Marlowe).[5]

It was rumored that Season 12 may be the last for Meloni after comments to an Australian reporter were misunderstood. Meloni commented that "I think 12 years is enough, a good number" in the Australian newspaper Courier-Mail. Meloni later clarified that at the time he had one year left on his contract and the show hadn't been picked up. "It wasn't [the reporter's] fault." and that he would continue on the show so long as it was picked up.[6]When asked in an interview if Hargitay could envision doing the show without him, she said, "Oh man, it breaks my heart to even think about it. I love that man and I love acting with that man and I think it’s our chemistry that makes the show what it is. So I don’t even want to think about it".[3]

For the past eleven years the set of Law & Order: SVU has been located in New Jersey; housed at NBC’s Central Archives building in North Bergen. Faced with losing the state’s 20% tax incentive, the show is headed to New York, which recently proposed boosting its incentive to $420 million annually. The show is set to move into the studio space at Chelsea Piers that has been occupied by the original Law & Order series.[7]

Guest stars

On July 6, 2010, TVGuide announced that former Lost star Henry Ian Cusick, will play a graphic artist named Erik Weber, for a minimum of two episodes. His character might also be a possible love interest for Olivia Benson, after the two meet, when Erik "comes to someone's aid".[8] On July 9, the website announced the casting of Joan Cusack, as mother of two girls, who both disappear, years apart and comes under suspicion of the SVU department.[9] Both actors will appear in the same episode together. Maria Bello has also signed on to appear on Law & Order: SVU, Bello will appear in two episodes, playing a woman with a secret past that Detective Benson is investigating. It's also a reunion of sorts for Bello and showrunner Neal Baer, who worked together on ER.[10]
