Law & Order

Law & Order: Los Angeles is an American police procedural-legal television drama series set in Los Angeles, where it is being produced. Created and produced by Dick Wolf and Blake Masters, it is set to air on NBC on September 29, 2010, as a spin-off of Wolf's successful crime drama Law & Order.[6]

Production

History and development

On January 10, 2010, NBC programming chief Angela Bromstad announced at the winter TCA Press Tour that the network was in talks with Dick Wolf about producing a new series, entitled Law & Order: Los Angeles, and indicated that NBC was seeking to hire writers for a pilot.[7]

Reports in early May suggested that NBC had made the decision to pick up Law & Order: Los Angeles with a 13-episode order for fall 2010, having brought Brotherhood creator Blake Masters on board to co-create the new series set in Los Angeles with Wolf.[8] NBC confirmed the new series order on May 14, 2010.[9] The fall timeslot for Law & Order: Los Angeles will be Wednesdays at 10:00 P.M. (Eastern) on NBC.[10] René Balcer will serve as showrunner and head writer on the new Los Angeles series and will executive produce alongside the pilot’s writer Blake Masters, Wolf and Peter Jankowski. [11]

Broadcast history

The show is set to premiere in the Wednesday 10:00 p.m. timeslot after Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. [12][6]

Casting and characters

On June 11, 2010, Michael Ausiello posted the descriptions for the characters of LOLA along with suggestions for who should portray them. He suggested Terrence Howard, Scott Foley, Ken Leung, Carlos Bernard, and Kristin Kreuk for the roles of Rex, TJ, Park, Morales, and Price, respectively. [13]

On July 7, 2010, Skeet Ulrich signed on to play LAPD Detective Rex Winters.[1] Alfred Molina was the next cast member announced on July 24, 2010, set to play the role of DDA Peter Morales.[3] On July 29, 2010; Corey Stoll was the next cast memeber announced, set to play LAPD Detective Tomas "TJ" Jaruszalski.[2] Terrence Howard joined the cast on July 30, 2010; Howard will play Deputy D.A. Joe Dekker who will work alongside Deputy D.A. Morales. Howard and Molina will be splitting the workload, each appearing roughly in the half of the episodes thus allowing the show to feature big feature names and the actors to stay active in movies.[4] On July 31, 2010; Regina Hall and Wanda De Jesus joined the cast as Assistant District Attorney Eva Price and Lieutenant Arleen Gonzales.[5]

Some actors read or have been informally approached for the two detective roles, including James Van Der Beek, Michael Rapaport, Michael Ealy, Dylan Walsh and Dean Cain. NBC and Dick Wolf are casting a wide net for the leads of the new Law & Order series. There may be interest in Lucy Liu for another role, possibly the captain. [14] While casting on the project is still in preliminary stages, the original filming date for casting is no longer slated to begin July 22; to give producers from UMS and Wolf Films more time to cast the project, the filming date has been pushed to August 2.[15]

  • Detective Rex Winters: (Skeet Ulrich) A handsome, rugged former Marine with keen intuition whose work style is heavily shaped by the Rodney King riots that took place within his first two months on the job. In his view, the world is constantly in chaos, and people are either good or bad. Winters's personal life is a bit more complicated: his first marriage ended because of an affair with his former-partner-turned-wife.[1][13]
  • Detective Tomas "TJ" Jaruszalski: (Corey Stoll) A mid-30s Hollywood native, TJ possesses a cynical view of the entertainment industry. He’s affable, smart, and confident. In contrast to his partner’s black-and-white view of things, TJ sees all shades of gray.[2][13]
  • Lieutenant Arleen Gonzales: (Wanda De Jesus) Commanding Officer of the LAPD Robbery Homicide Division, the fortysomething Gonzales is a cool professional who keeps her private life private. She’s also a passionate advocate for his/her detectives. [5][13]
  • Assistant District Attorney Eva Price: (Regina Hall) This brainy and drop dead gorgeous assistant prosecutor doesn’t take crap from anyone. [5][13]
  • Deputy District Attorney Peter Morales: (Alfred Molina) An offspring of a political family, Morales is a “battlefield general” in the courtroom yet "coarsely sardonic and self-deprecating" in real-life.[3][13]
  • Deputy District Attorney TBA: (Terrence Howard) A new Deputy D.A. who will work alongside Deputy D.A. Morales. He and Morales will be splitting the workload, each appearing roughly in the half of the episodes.[4]

Series overview

According to the description of the series, posted on NBC's official website, reads, "From Dick Wolf, comes a foray into the glitz, glamour and guilt of Los Angeles. From the tony Beverly Hills to the seedy side of Hollywood, LAPD's elite Robbery Homicide Division is on the case. Fusing classic ripped-from-the-headlines storytelling with the backdrop of LA, the series delves into the high-profile crimes of the West Coast." [16]

Episodes

TV Guide has stated that the first episode of Law & Order: Los Angeles will be titled "Fame". Its plot was inspired by "The Burglar Bunch," a group of out-of-control-children accused of targeting homes of actors like Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom.[17]
