Overview
The Sony NEX-5 is a digital camera launched on 11 May 2010 [1]. It is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with the body of a common point-and-shoot camera but with the sensor size and features of a full DSLR camera. As of right now its major competitors in the market is the micro 4/3 standard created by Panasonic and Olympus and a few low end Canon, Nikon, and even Sony alpha A-mounts[2]. The NEX-5 shoots 14.2 megapixel stills and has a 7 fps continous shotmode [3].
Features
For its size the NEX-5 is a feature full product. It has many features found only in SLR Cameras but also some that are normally only found in point and shoots. The body of the NEX-5 is made out of a magnesium alloy that spereates the NEX-5 from the cheaper plastic NEX-3. Also different from the NEX-3 is video quality. The NEX-5 can shoot in AVCHD 1080/60i HD. On the still photo front there is a 7 fps continuous shot. The DSLR APS-C sized sensor has a ISO sensitivity up to 12,800.[3]. The camera software has special features like twilight mode and sweep panorama. The latter letting you sweep across a city-sky line or similar long view and have the photos automatically stitched into a JPEG image on camera.
Lenses
The NEX-5 along with its little sister, the NEX-3, use a new lens mount system developed by Sony known as the Sony E Mount. As of right now there are two available lenses a all purpose 18-55mm kit lens that is available with most NEX kits and an ultra wide pancake 16mm lens. There is an add-on fish eye lens that when used in conjunction with the pancake 16 mm gives you a unique view. After the release of the Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 there will also be a 18-200 E mount lens that will be able to be used with the NEX-5 without an adapter. However with a proposed price tag of $600 it is a hefty buy for a lens worth equal to the camera itself [4]. With the use of an adapter the NEX series of cameras will be able to use all Sony A Mount lenses and all legacy lenses.
