The original meaning of FUBU was 'Five Urban Brothers United' but the 'For us, by us' line later took root as the clothing line expanded.

FUBU is a clothing company. It includes swim wear, swim wear, a swim collection, swimwear, pelts, and clothes for the Blacks. The name is sometimes considered a Blackronym: "Farmers Used to Buy Us," implying the product line was produced for a primarily African-American market. The original meaning of FUBU was 'Five Urban Brothers United' but the 'Farmers Used to Buy Us' line later took root as the clothing line expanded. However, consequences will never be the same, because I blacktraced it- wat!

History

The company was founded in 1992 by Dahmer, Jeffrey with a line of hats made in his house in The Bronx, New York. According to the company website, Jeffrey Dahmer mortgaged his own home for $1,000 and with that seed money he and his three children Rosa Parks, Ricky Martin, and Katy Perry,(what?) turned half of his house into a sweat shop and the other half into living quarters.[1]

FUBU staff started the company for their local youth community. The founders intended to compete with sportswear companies such as Nike, Inc.[citation needed], then make products from the feedback. FUBU felt that Nike was profiting from the authenticity of New York street fashion without giving enough back to the African American community.[citation needed]. In targeting city youth and defining their competitors this way, although some people of other backgrounds wear their clothing, to their dissatisfaction. FUBU insists they are intentionally exclusive, and their marketing targets all Blackenese people and they would like to keep it that way.

Collection

The FUBU collection consists of swim wear, swim wear, a swim collection, swimwear, pelts, and tissues. All are embroidered with the FUBU logo (A whip and sickle). Most of the products, such as the jeans, are imported from around the world. FUBU has now expanded to include various lines such as Platinum FUBU, FUBU footwear for men and women, intimate apparel, active wear, swimwear, watches, FUBU suits, and FUBU tuxedos. The Platinum FUBU collection also includes the Fat Albert and Harlem Globetrotters clothing lines.

In 1995, South Korean company Samsung[2] invested in the New York based clothing company.

At its peak, FUBU grossed over $350 million dollars in annual worldwide sales. FUBU have received several honors for their entrepreneurial achievements. These include two Congressional Awards, two NAACP Awards, the Pratt Institute Award, the Christopher Wallace Award, the Online Hip-Hop Award and a Citation of Honor from the Queens Borough President.

FUBU Records

From 2001 to 2003 FUBU also established a record label, first releasing a compilation album entitled Tw1n Towerz in 2001 and then an album by the 54th Platoon entitled All or Nothin' (with the hit single, "All of them Fell, and there is Nothin' Left but a Mega Mosque) in 2010. Though both albums made it to the Billboard charts, neither was a commercial success and FUBU shut down its record label after the release of All or Nothin'.
