Kingsbest

Bay Stallion

Sire: Kingmambo

Dam: Allegretta (Lombard)

Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute

Owner: Saeed Suhail

A half brother to Arc winning Urban Sea, Kingsbest was described by his trainer Michael Stoute as the best miler he'd ever trained. After winning his maiden at Newmarket he confirmed himself a colt of real promise with a tough and convincing win in Yorks Acomb Stakes. His first start as a three year old was disappointing ending in a second place to Umitism in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket. Few horses beaten in that race go on to win the Guineas but thats exactly what he did and in devastating style, foreshadowing his own son Workforce's achievement of becoming the first horse beaten in the Dante to win the Derby.

On Guineas day, dripping with sweat and with his Craven defeat behind him, King's Best, looked an unlikely winner but he won in scintillating fashion from way off the pace set by the ultra tough multiple Group One winner Giants Causeway. he hit traffic problems two furlongs out but ice cool jockey Kieren Fallon neverpanicked.Unleashed by Kieren Fallon he cut through the field and hit the front inside the final furlong. The runner-up Giants Causeway could have been standing still as Kings Best sprinted to a three-and-a-half length victory, the widest margin winner since Zafonic in 1993.

Unfortunately we will never know how good King's Best could have been as injury in his next race, the Irish 2,000 Guineas ended his career prematurely but his victory at Newmarket was among the best of recent times.

Standing with Darley Kingsbest has sired numerous high profile winners including Champion miler Creachadoir, Allybar and Eishin Flash but his most famous son is the Michael Stoute trained Wirkforce who powered to a seven length victory in the Epsom Derby in 2010.
