Rest (band)
Rest have performed regularly in Ireland, toured the United Kingdom and supported many internationally recognised acts such as Isis (band), Cult of Luna, Oxbow, Giddy Motors, The Apes, The Redneck Manifesto, Electric Eel Shock, Jetplane Landing and Explosions in the Sky. They released one album, and one mini-album; "Burning In Water, Drowning In Flame" (2004), and "Operation: Impending Doom" (2007) on Out on a Limb Records, a track from the mini-album was included on a Kerrang compilation album, "New Breed" [1] in 2006.
History
Cork based Rest formed in the late 1990's and were a secondary school garage band playing Kyuss material, under the name Wretch. They received some following, winning the "C.I.T. Battle of the Bands" in this line-up. A name change saw the band abandon vocals in favour of instrumentals [2], and their music progressed from stoner rock to post rock to ambient doom.
Since 2001 they have been signed to Ireland's Out on a Limb Records, initially releasing a split single with giveamanakick, their song being an instrumental doom version of Walking in the Air.
They annually play a Halloween concert for their Cork fans in University College Cork's Granary Theatre. Since 2009 they frequently participate in the interdisciplinary art, sound-art & noise event Black Suns.
Style
Their style is a mix of Instrumental Rock[3], Progressive Rock with elements of Ambient, Doom, Black Metal, Post Metal and a Post Rock sensibility. Their music includes frequent rhythm changes, cluster chords and atonality, as well as melodic devices, and chord changes often used in Jazz.
The sound of the first album leaned more to a post rock direction. The album included an accompaniment of a string quartet, and vocals were supplied by Cork based vocalist Annette Buckley[4]. The mini-album is much sparser in terms of orchestrations, as has a more rock oriented sound with drums (sometimes distorted), bass and guitar tracks.
